Scottish Crossbill

The Scottish Crossbill is a large,  stocky and powerful Finch specialised for eating the seeds of Spruces Pines and other Conifers. It is the only animal to be found solely in Britain, being found only in the Scots Pine forests of the Scottish Highlands. Using its hooked, crossed bill to prise cone scales apart so it can extract the seeds with it’s tongue. Feeding acrobatically and often noisily in the tree tops, but must drink frequently to moisten it’s diet of dry seeds.
